David Parry's Races

David has informed me of changes to the routes for some of his races in the North Yorkshire Moors. These have led to changes in distance and in most cases Category from those in the printed Calendar. The races affected are Levisham Limping, Ossy Oiks, Broughton Wood Wobble, Whorlton Run, Guisborough Grunt and Inclined to Madness. As a result these are now all Short Category races and open to Juniors who were 16 and over on Jan. 1st 2012. Updated details for each race can be viewed in the website Calendar.

Brian Belfield

The body of Brian Belfield (63) was located by an RAF search and rescue helicopter (assisting Cockermouth & Keswick Mountain Rescue Teams) on Monday last after he was reported overdue when competing in the Buttermere Sailbeck Race.

 
Brian’s death is a tragedy for his family and friends and the sympathies of all fell runners will be with them. I have written to his widow, Sandra, on behalf of the Fell Runners Association.
 
Brian was a member of Staffordshire Moorlands AC and had been a member of the FRA for ten years. He had completed the Sailbeck race four times since 2006 and was an experienced fell runner. In 2010 by completing the Duddon Valley, Ennerdale, Three Shires and Langdale races he qualified in the Lakeland Classics Trophy. Many of us will have known him or will have run alongside him.
 
This is not the first death to occur in competitive fell running: Ted Pepper in the 1978 Three Peaks Race, Bob English at Ennerdale in 1981 and Judith Taylor at Kentmere in 1994. As in each of those cases, the FRA will review the circumstances of Brian’s death and consider what, if any, re-examination of the FRA’s safety procedures is required.
I recently re-read a piece written by the late Mike Rose for the June 1993 Fellrunner ,following the death of Carol Matthews in a relay race in Wales in 1991, on the consequences for the race organiser. Mike Rose was a race competitor, an eminent member of the FRA Committee and a race organiser. His article included the phrase “There but for the grace of God”. 
 
The Sailbeck Race is organised by Mike and Hazel Robinson. As we all know they are experienced competitors and race organisers but they now face what everyone who has ever been associated with race organisation prays they will never have to endure.
 
Of course our first thoughts should be for those who grieve for Brian Belfield but our sport can only exist because of people like Mike and Hazel: and they deserve all the support we fell runners can give them.
