Funding

Funding restrictions may affect the number of teams supported and athletes should expect to make some financial contribution to travel costs although the selection committee will endeavour to minimise this.

Selection Criteria

The committee will select the best available teams to represent England, although where shown some teams will be selected as development teams to encourage less experienced athletes and give them experience of international competition.

All eligible athletes wishing to gain a place are expected to compete in trial races and the selectors view trials as the primary means of selecting the teams. Current form may be taken into account.

It is important that the team managers are kept informed by runners of their aspirations to run for England well before the date of team selection, which will usually be the date of the trial race. Any runners wishing to be considered for selection but not able to compete at a selection race must let the relevant England Team Manager know well in advance of the selection race.

For all races if the selectors believe that a minimum performance standard for selection has not been achieved, they reserve the right not to select a full team. We do not intend to send teams to international events composed of athletes who have not demonstrated the level of performance required.

UKA Mountain running selection policy 2009

2009 sees three exciting new changes to international mountain/trail running:

  1. The old World Mountain Running Trophy becomes the World Championships, with a single UK team not taking part

  2. The first-ever Commonwealth Championships for ultra distance and mountain running will take place in Keswick i19/20 September 2009. Held under the auspices of the International Association of Ultra Runners (IAU) and the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA), this will feature uphill and up and down mountain races as well as two ultra ones

Below is further infromation about the selection races/criteria for the three UK international events.

Both England and Scotland will use the trial for the World Mountain Running Championships as their trial for the Commonwealth Championship teams.

It is UK Athletics’ intention to send the full number of athletes to each of the Championships, assuming athletes of the appropriate standard for this level of competition. UK Athletics are committed to sending the strongest possible mountain running teams to the Championships. The selectors reserve the right, where performance standards are not considered sufficient, to not select full teams. Junior teams = age 16-19 on 31 December 2009.
