FRA Navigation Courses 2026
An introduction to map reading and navigation on the fells for those new to fell running, or wishing to try races requiring navigational skills.
The course runs from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon. Indoor theory sessions will cover the basic skills and other relevant topics on Friday evening. Saturday and Sunday consist of practical instruction sessions on the fells. Come prepared for exercises on the fells in any weather! There will be low-key navigation events for you to test your improving skills.
The cost is £100 for FRA members, including full board. For 2026, FRA Navigation Courses will be available for FRA members only.
Courses are planned for 6th March - 8th March 2026 in Kettlewell and dates TBC at Elterwater.

NEXT STEPS
Fellrunners who have attended a navigation course in the past are encouraged to practise what they have learned and there are many small, informal navigation events such as:
- FRA licensed Orienteering and Mountain Marathon style events which are notated "MO" or "MM" in the index of races listed from page 81 of the FRA Handbook and Fixtures Calendar 2024.
- Try orienteering and in particular SPUNCH events which can be found on the British Orienteering website www.britishorienteering.org.uk
