The courses

The Fell Runners Association offers a range of courses to enable members to improve their skills in Coaching, Navigation and First Aid. The pages are now updated with the currently available courses in 2026 and early 2027.
Coaching, the Fell Hill, Mountain, Trail module is an add-on course to holders of the following England Athletics qualifications, Leadership in running fitness - Coaching Assistant - Athletics Coach Endurance - Coach in Running Fitness - Level 2 Endurance.
Passing the FHMT module (along with having a valid two-day outdoor first course) allows leaders to take groups off-road. Two dates are available for bookings, 7 November - Commondale, North York Moors and 15 November - Sedbergh, Cumbria, a further bookable date to be added shortly for 17 October - Kingston village (vicinity Lewes) South Downs.
Additional courses will be added for 2027, provisional locations, North York Moors, Cumbria, West Yorkshire and Shropshire, others subject to demand.
A coach version of this module is being piloted this year and expected to go live in 2027.

First Aid, the outdoor two-day course has two dates available in October 2026 and February 2027 in the Peak District. This course is ideal for outdoor leaders and run leaders.

Navigation, our renowned weekend course mixes theory and practical work as a terrific introduction to map reading and navigation for racing on the fells. Courses available September 2026 at Elterwater in the Lake District and March 2027 at Kettlewell in the Yorkshire Dales.
