2005 WMRT Course, Wellington, New Zealand
The website provides excellent information about the Wellington route; profile, map, side view of the hillside, etc.
Clearly the route is not a straight dash up a mountainside and a significant section is on public paths under pine trees which are sometimes relatively narrow and provide short sight lines. There are the occasional steps (up and down) and tree roots + tarmac of course for the start and finish. There are some lovely views of Wellington and its harbour.
